If my son is gay I will pray. Not for him, not that he’ll change, but that I’ll have the grace, compassion and wisdom to convey my unconditional love and acceptance for him just the way he is. If my son is gay I will pray that I’ve helped instill a strong sense of confidence that will allow him to rise above the hatred that exists in such a judgmental world. If my son is gay I hope he knows that I’m a safe place to land when he needs to laugh, cry or talk. If my son is gay, I pray he has the wisdom to know that he doesn’t need to change the world and that being the best version of himself is all anyone could ever ask of him. If my son is gay I hope he knows that his parents don’t care a thing about who he loves, as long as that person treats him with respect and makes him happy. If my son is gay I hope he doesn’t feel that he needs to “come out” to me and that he can just introduce me to the man he loves.
If my son is gay I hope he knows that he could never disappoint me if he was being true to himself and following his heart. I promise to love my children unconditionally, which in case you were wondering, that is how the bible teaches us to love. Love without conditions. My sons are an extension of myself and my husband and we will always stand back and let them blossom into the young men they are destined to be. That is all we can do as parents.
