It’s no secret that I’ve been dealing with postpartum anxiety and depression. My good ol’ friend Zoloft has been a huge help, but I’ve also taken steps to deal with these struggles in a creative way. When I was nursing my newborn I found myself deep into the Youtube rabbit hole and watching makeup artists like Jaclyn Hill, MannyMua, RawBeautyKristi and NikkiTutorials. I was never that into makeup before, but I found it so relaxing to watch these tutorials and just escape from the stresses of motherhood. I was so fascinated by their techniques, personalities, and products that I decided to try some looks for myself.
I didn’t have any high end products, but I didn’t need them. What I found to be most therapeutic was that I was forcing myself to take 15-20 minutes out of my day to focus on myself and practice self-care. At the end of it I felt pretty darn cute and accomplished. I feel like I was a better mom to my babies when I just took that little bit of time to spoil myself. It almost felt like I was recharged – regardless of how little sleep I was getting.
My past-time has now turned into a healthy obsession but I find myself to be quite unapologetic about it. I want to share what I love to do because it makes me feel good and I’m hoping to help other people feel good too. I also want to make it a point that just because you have babies, doesn’t mean that you are obligated to give up things that make you feel good. I promise that a little bit of screen time while you play with makeup isn’t going to hurt your children at all.
I find inspiration from my kids…. literally. I started a #kidspirationchallenge on Instagram where I do makeup looks inspired by my children’s toys. It’s so much fun and my oldest has a good time helping me pick out a look for the day. Please follow me on Instagram and check out how my kids have inspired me! If you decide to take on this challenge (even for just one look) please tag me! I would LOVE to see it!
